Christmas nails

Super easy nail diy for the holidays, using 2 shades of nail polish and scotch tape.

Choose a light color for your base and let it dry well. I chose a shiny beige for my base.

Once the first layer has dried use scotch tape to make the patterns you like.
Let the base dry very very well! Don't hurry or the scotch tape will pill it off.

I put small triangles for the base of my fingers and used a dark green nail polish for my top layer. Add a second layer of your dark nail polish to make the color stronger.

Paper snowflakes

Perfect diy to spend a Christmas morning with your children!

You will need white paper in square pieces. You can use colourful paper for more colour-block result.

Θα χρειαστείτε λευκό χαρτί κομμένο σε τετράγωνα διαφορων μεγεθών. Μπορείτε να χρησιμοποιήσετε πολύχρωμα χαρτιά αμα θελετε μια παιχνιδιαρικη εκδοχη!

Fold the square diagonally to form a triangle. Fold it now in half and make a smaller triangle. Continue folding until you have a thin triangle.

Διπλώστε το τετράγωνο διαγωνίως ώστε να έχετε ένα τρίγωνο. Διπλώσε στη μέση για να σχηματίσετε ένα μικρότερο τρίγωνο. Συνεχίστε μέχρι να έχετε ένα λεπτό τρίγωνο.

Use your scissors to cut the level the edge (this will give a more round shape to the final snowflake). Cut out small pieces, either symmetrically or randomly, as you like.

Unfold the paper and you have your first snowflake! In nature every snowflake has a unique shape. Make sure to follow this rule and have fun!

Greeting cards

This is an easy tutorial on how to decorate Christmas greeting cards using only old book pages.

Ένας εύκολος και απλός τρόπος να διακοσμήσετε Χριστουγεννιάτικες κάρτες με παλιά βιβλια.


You will need:
card stock
old books
scissors
glue

Cut a triangle out of a book page, for the shape of a Christmas tree. Cut it in strips or smaller triangles to make it look as abstract as you wish.
Don't hesitate to create minimal or complicated designs.

Πάρτε μία σελίδα βιβλίου και κόψτε ένα τρίγωνο.
Στη συνέχεια, κώψτε το τρίγωνο σε μιρκότερα τριγωνα ή λωρίδες για να είναι το αποτέλεσμα όσο αφηρημένο το θέλετε.

Old books - Part 1

I've always liked book upcycling diy projects, but I would never "damage" a book from my collection.

Luckily I work in a library and we need to remove old and out of date books, which I'm more than happy to reuse in another way!!

You need to choose a thick book in order to have a great result. But it's up to you how tall the book you use will be. Remove the cover and you're ready to start.

Take the first page and fold it in half. Take the second page and fold it in half, putting the edge of the page between the first and the second page. Continue folding each page separately until you finish with the book.

The font size and type of the book you choose will determine the final result. So will the black&white or colorful pictures and the yellowish pages of an old book.

I have mine next to the front door and I store mail and small notes in it. Where will you put yours?

Playing with berries - Part 2

Blueberry milk

Add 20-50 blueberries in a mug of milk and as much sugar as it fits your taste.
Crush some blueberries and they will color the milk purple. Enjoy!!

Προσθέστε 20-50 μύρτιλα σε μία κούπα γάλα και όση ζάχαρη θελετε.
Λιώστε κάποια από τα μοούρα για να χρωματιστεί το γάλα μωβ. Θα το λατρέψετε!





Strawberry smoothie 

 Ιn a mixer add 2 tablespoons greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon sugar, strawberries and milk in order to make it as liquid or creamy as you prefer. You can drop a couple of ice cubes in the glass to keep it cool on a hot summer day :)

Φραουλοποτό

Στο μούλτι προσθέστε 2 κ.σ. γιαούρτι, 1κ.σ. ζάχαρη, φράουλες και όσο γάλα επιθυμείτε ώστε να γίνει κρεμώδες ή πιο υγρό ανάλογά με τα γούστα σας. Βάλτε κανα δυο παγάκια στο ποτήρι για να παραμείνει δροσερό στο καύσωνα :)

Playing with berries - Part 1

Lots of berries here in Finland every summer and it's time for me to try new recipes!!
And of course I will share them with you.

Υπαρχουν αμέτρητα είδη μούρων εδώ στη Φινλανδία κάθε καλοκαίρι. Τέλεια δικαιολογία για να δοκιμάσω νέες συνταγές! Και να τις μοιραστώ μαζί σας φυσικά.

Blueberry muffins - Κεκάκια με μύρτιλα

Incredients:

1cup margarine
1½ cup sugar or 2 tablespoons honey
2 eggs
1 cup milk
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
few mastiha tears (mastic)
blueberries

Συστατικά:
1 φλ. μαργαρίνη
1½ φλ. ζάχαρη ή 2 κ.σ. μέλι
2 αυγά
1 φλ. γάλα
3 φλ. αλεύρι
3 κ.γ. μπέικιν πάουντερ
δάκρυα μαστίχας
μύρτιλα

Mastiha powder - σκόνη μαστίχας

Beat the butter until it's creamy soft and add the sugar (I like using honey from orange trees, I get it from my beekeeper uncle in Peloponnisos,Greece). Continue beating while adding the eggs and the milk.

Now it's time for the mastiha trick: put the mastiha drops and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a mortar. Beat it until it's all powder.

Add the powder in the batter. At this point you can add berries in order to get them smashed in the mixer and have a dark colored batter.
Add flour slowly and the blueberries, mixing with a spatula. Your batter should be creamy and soft. Fill up muffin cups and bake them at 180C for 20 minutes, until the toothpick comes out clean.

Χτυπήστε το βόυτυρο μέχρι να μαλακώσει και προσθέστε τη ζάχαρη (προτιμώ μέλι πορτοκαλιά που προμηθεύομαι από το μελισσοκόμο θείο μου στη Πελοπόννησο). Προσθέστε τα αυγά και το γάλα. Προσθέστε μαστίχα την οποία έχετε κάνει σκόνη σε γουδί με τη βοήθεια 1κ.σ. ζάχαρης.

Σε αυτό το σημείο μπορείτε να προσθέσετε μύρτιλα ώστε να λιώσουν με το μίξερ και να έχετε μία σκουρόχρωμη ζύμη.

Προσθέστε το αλεύρι σιγά σιγά και τα μύρτιλα, ανακατεύοντας με μία σπάτουλα. Το μείγμα πρέπει να είναι μαλακό και κρεμώδες.
Γεμίστε φόρμες για κεκάκια και ψήστε στους 180C για 20 λεπτά, μέχρι η οδοντογλυφίδα να βγαίνει καθαρή.

Summer jars

Here is a project for decorating your home or office with natural souvenirs you might be collecting during your summer vacations!  

You will need: 

- glass jars

- sand from a beach or decorative sand

- sea shells

- a needle or tweezers 

- strong glue 

Put some sand in the jar carefully not to make a mess.

Using the tweezers or needle place the sea shells on top of the sand.

Glue a beautiful shell on the cork of the jar and let it dry. Add small amount of glue around the cork in order to close the jar firmly. That way it will never open and spill the sand and sea shells.

Once the glue has dried you can use them to decorate your home or office.

Keep the essence of summer with you all year round.

New look

What can you do with an old pullover and an old chair?

Miracles!!

Τι μπορείς να κάνεις με ένα παλιό, τρύπιο πουλοβεράκι και μία παλιά καρέκλα;

Θαύματα!!

Cut the sleeves and separate the two sides of the pullover, the front and the back. One piece goes for the bottom and the other for the back of the chair. Measure how big the pieces have to be and cut them. Leave few extra centimeters, if it's too much, you can cut it as you go.

Κώψε τα μανίκια και ξεχωρίσε το μπροστά και πίσω μέρος της μπλούζας. Το ένα κομμάτι θα πάει για το κάθισμα και το άλλο για τη πλάτη της καρέκλας. Μετρήσε το μέγεθος που χρειάζεσε και κόψε ανάλογα. Αφήσε λίγα εκατοστά περίσευμα, αν είναι πολύ μεγάλο μπορείς να το κόψεις αργότερα.


With a pair of scissors or a butter knife push the fabric in. Make sure to stretch the fabric well!

Με ένα ψαλίδι ή μαχαίρι βουτύρου σπρώξε το ύφασμα μέσα στην εσοχή που έχει η καρέκλα. Βεβαιώσου ότι το τεντώνεις καλά! 

It's been a year since I "fixed" the chair and it hasn't fallen apart yet. It's a very easy procedure and a good solution to freshen up an old desk chair. Now it fits perfectly in our purple flat!

Έχει περάσει ένας χρόνος από όταν έφτιαξα την καρέκλα κι ακόμη δεν έχει βγει τίποτα εκτώς. Είναι πολύ εύκολη διαδικασία και μία καλή λύση ανανέωσης μίας παλιάς καρέκλας γραφείου. Τώρα ταιριάζει στο μωβ διαμέρισμά μας!

Change of texture

I found some old plastic bracelets, that I'm not gonna wear anymore. Instead of giving them away, I decided to fresh them up. I got some thread in my favorite colours and got to work.
Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the process, but what I did is really simple.

Βρήκα κάτι παλιά πλαστικά βραχιόλια, που δε πρόκειται να ξαναφορέσω. Αντί λοιπόν να τα χαρίσω, αποφάσισα να τα ανανεώσω. Πήρα κλωστή κεντήματος, στα αγαπημένα μου χρώμματα, και ξεκίνησα.
Δυστυχώς ξέχασα να βγάλω φωτογραφίες όσο το έφτιαχνα, αλλά η διαδικασία είναι πολύ εύκολη. 

I rolled the thread around the bracelet, over and over. Making sure it's tight and firm around the plastic. I added two shades of purple and only one stripe of yellow...for the extra charm!

Άρχισα να τυλίγω τη κλωστή γύρω γύρω από το βραχιόλι. Πρόσεχα να τη τυλίγω σφιχτά γύρω από το πλαστικό. Χρησιμοποίησα δύο αποχρω΄σεις του μωβ και έκανα μόνο μία λωρίδα κίτρινο...για έξτρα τσαχπινιά!


When I was done with the thread, I cut a leather strap. I used a super glue to attach the strap at the inside, securing the thread.

Όταν τελείωσα με τη κλωστή, έκοψα μία λωρίδα δέρμα. Με δυνατή κόλλα, κόλλησα τη λωρίδα στο εσωτερικό. 

I really like the look and feeling of the thread, so much better than the plastic!
Any suggestions on how to decorate the other bracelet?

Looking for the sun

Last year we moved in a small flat in Helsinki. Like several old buildings here, it has one small balcony. I mean very very small! It's grey and the look of cement is rather cold and depressing. We knew from the beginning some changes should be made. And so it began...

Πέρσυ μετακομήσαμε σε ένα μικρό διαμέρισμα στο Ελσίνκι. Όπως πολλά παλιά κτήρια, έχει ένα μπλακονάκι. Εννοώ ένα πολύ πολύ μικρό μπαλκονάκι! Είναι γκρι και το τσιμέντο μοιάζει κρύο και καταθληπτικό. Ξέραμε από την αρχή ότι έπρεπε να αλλάξουμε κάτι. Κι έτσι ξεκινήσαμε...

We visited IKEA and arranged a van to deliver the heavy things back home, some desk and shelf unit, etc. When the guy was moving the boxes upstairs, I asked him if I could keep the palette all our stuff were packed on. Smiling he ensured me I can keep it, but as he was taking off his van he asked me "Why do you want it?" I want to fix something for the balcony.

Επισκεφτήκαμε την ΙΚΕΑ και κανονίσαμε να μας φέρουν στο σπίτι τα πιο βαριά αντικείμενα, το γραφείο και μια ραφιέρα, κλπ. Όταν ο μεταφορέας ανέβαζε τα κουτιά στο διαμέρισμα, τον ρώτησα αν μπορούσα να κρατήσω την παλέτα. Χαμογελαστός μου απάντησε καταφατικά, αλλά καθώς την κατέβασζε από το βαν με ρώτησε "Τι τη θέλεις;" Θέλω να φτιάξω κάτι για το μπαλκόνι. 

For several days the palette was waiting patiently in the balcony, while we were trying to figure out how we'll saw it and reassemble it. There is a big lack of space in the balcony. Which doesn't provide you room to move around and do some heavy job. But we were already planting herbs and flowers.

Για αρκετές μέρες η παλέτα περίμενε υπομονετικά να αποφασίσουμε πώς θα τη πριονίσουμε και ξανασυναρμολογήσουμε. Υπάρχει σημαντική έλλειψη χώρου στο μπαλκόνι. Δεν είναι εύκολο να κάνεις βαριές δουλειές. Αλλά είχαμε ήδη αρχίσει να φυτεύουμε μυρωδικά και λουλούδια. 

At last we started sawing. Really loud hammering followed. Every hit was echoing to the building across the parking lot. Luckily no neighbor started shouting at me. What patient people! The final product might not be perfect, but it's pretty sweet. Some shelf is crooked, but it's enough to hold our pots. It's ideal to put your glass or a plate on. Very convenient for a balcony, where you can't fit a table.

Με τα πολλά ξεκινήσαμε το πριόνισμα. Ακολούθησε εκωφαντικό κάρφωμα. Κάθε σφυροκόπημα αντιλαλούσε στην απένταντη πολυκατοικία. Ευτυχώς κανείς γείτονας δεν άρχισε να μου φωνάζει. Τι υπομονετικοί άνθρωποι! Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα μπορεί να μην είναι τέλειο, αλλά είναι μια γλύκα. Κάποια ράφια γέρνουν ελαφρώς, αλλά είναι αρκετά για να κρατήσουν τις γλάστρες. Είναι ιδανικά να ακουμπάς το ποτήρι σου κι ένα πιάτο. Πολύ βολικό για ένα μπαλκόνι, το οποίο δε χωράει κάποιο τραπέζι.

 Last summer we really enjoyed our balcony. Since we didn't go to Greece at all, we used to sit out there and sunbathe. And this year we decided to change some more and make the balcony even better looking. Another visit to IKEA paid off. There is some wood flooring for outdoor spaces. It's in puzzle looking pieces you assemble together. 

Πέρσυ το καλοκαίρι απολαύσαμε το μπαλκόνι. Μιας και δε πήγαμε καθόλου στην Ελλάδα, κάναμε ηλιοθεραπεία στο μπαλκονάκι μας. Για φέτος, αποφασίσαμε να μεταμορφώσουμε κι άλλο το χώρο. Μία ακόμη επίσκεψη στην ΙΚΕΑ μας αποζημίωσε. Έχει δύο είδη ξύλινου πατώματος για εξωτερικούς χώρους. Είναι σε κομματια που συναρμολογείς σαν παζλ.

It looks so cozy and inviting now! And very cool with the candles.
Can't wait for the tulips and other flowers to start blossoming.

Είναι τόσο ζεστό και φιλόξενο τώρα πια!
Και φουλ ρομάτζο με τα κεριά τη νύχτα. Ανυπομονούμε να ανθίσουν οι τουλίπες και τα άλλα λουλούδια.

Λίγες μόνο μέρες χρειάστηκαν για να εθιστώ στο ftiaxto.gr. Ένα χρόνο αργότερα, εξακολουθώ να το επισκέπτομαι καθημερινά για να παίρνω ιδέες.

Πρόκειται για μία ιστοσελίδα πολύ καλοστημένη και φιλική προς το χρήστη. Η Βάλια κι η Ελίνα συγκεντρώνουν και παρουσιάζουν ιδέες από την άβυσσο του ίντερνετ. Ευτυχώς κάνουν και μετάφραση στις αγγλόφωνες οδηγίες. Να 'στε καλά κορίτσια γιατί όλο μπλεκόμουν με ορολογίες πλεξίματος από αγγλικά στα ελληνικά.

Τώρα έκανα και την πρώτη αγορά από το e-shop. Το πακέτο έφταση με ταχύτητα φωτός στη πόρτα των γονιών μου. Άλλος ένας λόγος να ανυπομονώ να επιστρέψω Ελλάδα!

I only needed few days to get addicted to ftiaxto.gr. One year later, I still visit it daily for inspiration. 

It's a website really well made and user friendly. Valia and Elina collect and present ideas from the abyss we call internet. Luckily, they also translate the english-written instructions from blogs. Bless you girls, I was always confused with knitting terms from english to greek.

I just made my first order on their e-shop. The package arrived with the speed of light at my parents' place. Another reason to look forward to going to Greece!
